Our Toxic Lives: Gua Sha Detoxing

This post is going to be a little bit different. I was going to carry on with a new article in my “Our Toxic Lives” series, on personal care products and how there have been many cases recently reported in the press regarding adverse and sometimes fatal reactions to shampoos and hair treatments. But instead I have two quite crazy photos to show you, which may not be quite what you think they are. They are of my good friend Alec, who is an extremely gifted healer and masseur, who is currently studying both Thai massage and Craniosacral Therapy, but who is also exploring other healing and massage techniques.

Alec recently returned from a study trip in Thailand, where he discovered a little known technique, originally developed in China, called Gua Sha. This consists of the body being scraped, traditionally with a buffalo horn, which has the effect of drawing toxins to the surface of our skin. As you can see, Alec had quite a few toxins in his body, and these are aligned with the muscles in his back.

It looks severe, but in fact the marks only last a day or two, and is probably more gentle than you realise. In the top picture you can see the lady who gave Alec the treatment.

What these photos show to me though is just how many toxins we hold in our bodies, due to bad diet, city living, the chemicals we poison ourselves with daily, and working in badly designed offices. If you have not seen it, you may want to read my “Day in the Life” article to allow yourself to really absorb just how toxic our lives have become.

In the meantime though, if you live in or around Newbury in England, you may want to contact Alec. He gave me a two hour and extremely deep Thai massage. Alec is a deeply sensitive soul and he can pick up blocked energies and tightened muscle that many other therapists often can not (or for some reason are unwilling) to reach. I felt a little bit nauseous after my massage, but that too was a sign of the toxins being released into my body! But with my bones suitably cracked and knots ironed out, it was one of the best massages I have ever had.

Stay clean, stay happy folks!
