Maria and I have just returned to Brazil after a month back in the UK seeing friends and family, and also visiting some very wonderful places such as Oxford, Keswick, Snowdonia, Anglesey and Marlborough. We were delighted to be able to return to Schumacher College for a couple of days too, a visit which happily coincided with a visit of Satish.

As many of you will have seen, my last article was a review of Satish’s latest book Soil, Soul, Society: A New Trinity For Our Time. Maria and I took the opportunity to speak to Satish about his book, and we decided to record a short video so you could hear Satish talk about his book in his own words. We hope you enjoy it.

  1. Simon,
Thanks for this. I love what Satish states about mindfulness.

When I mention about life going too fast to friends, it really strikes a chord. Sustainability is not just limited to the natural environment, but also to our own energy, which gets very depleted when having to live life at the speed we seem to do now.

So I always keep asking the question: Do I have a sustainable lifestyle at a *personal energy* level?

You may not be surprised also if I mention that this need for mindfulness is absolutely crucial when developing software. It is interesting that even in the depth of a highly technological activity, we desperately need to focus on such a timeless personal faculty. This is something that can so easily be forgotten when working in an economic way.

Indeed, I consider that maintaining mindfulness under economic pressure is THE primary lesson I have learnt in 30 years of software development.

I hope the journey back to Brazil was ok.
All the very best to you and Maria for 2014

  2. Great stuff, Simon. Left me smiling. Given your description in your previous blog, I am going to wait to buy a printed copy of the book, rather than an electronic one, so I can value each page.
