In the late 70s and early 80s as I was growing up I always used to love the tv show whose full title was Why Don’t You Just Switch Off Your Television Set and Go Out and Do Something Less Boring Instead? The opening song can still be watched on Youtube:
Well now here in Brazil producer Wanderson Chan from Casimiro de Abreu, a town in the state of Rio, has created a short film to help incentivise children and teens to switch off their various electronic devices and to get out into the streets to get physical. The film was uploaded on Facebook, where at the time of writing it has received 5,128,517 views, 182,868 shares and 28,891 likes. Here is the film:
It’s a great film without dialogue, just a bit of a banging soundtrack so everyone can watch, enjoy and share it. The video has also receive a great deal of media coverage, and here in Brazil Chan spoke to Globo News saying that:
We’ve always been meeting to play for a long time now. We are all childhood friends and always joke about, but for us holidays are a ritual. We play everything, cops and robbers, imagem e ação (image and action), hide and seek, pique- flag. So the idea of making the video is to rescue this ritual of play.
The video has not just been watched in Brazil, but worldwide, with Chan discovering that a group in Florida had formed to play in the street. Chan himself has an 8-year old son who did not know how to play in the street, but now it seems that perhaps there is a resurgence in the joy of communal larking around.
So yes, here the strong message from Brazil to the rest of the world is a simple Why Don’t You Just Switch Off Your Smart Phone and Go Out and Do Something Less Boring Instead!??
